Delve Deeper: "Sacred Space in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam" with Prof. Joan Branham

Posted

Joan Branham, a Professor of art history and Associate Dean at Providence College, will lead a course examining how Jews make their buildings holy. It will focus on the Solomonic and Herodian Temples in Jerusalem, and art and architecture of ancient synagogues after the destruction of the Temples. Along the way it will offer comparisons with Christian and Muslim sacred spaces, and address the role of gender, sacrifice, blood, and pilgrimage in constructing the sacred. The course meets for eleven sessions on Thursday evenings from January 16 to April 2, at Temple Emanu-El, 99 Taft Avenue, Providence.

Delve Deeper is a project of Temple Emanu-El's Koffler Bornstein Families Institute of Jewish Studies, in partnership with Congregation Agudas Achim, Congregation Beth Sholom, and Temple Sinai. We are grateful for the generous support from the Jewish Alliance of Greater Rhode Island's Innovation Funding, without which this would not be possible.
