Uncovering the Holy Land: The Archaeology of Jerusalem, Masada, and Huqoq - Scholar-in-Residence Weekend with Professor Jodi Magness, March 27-28

Friday, March 27 | 5:45-6:45pm

Masada: Last Stronghold of the Jewish Resistance Against Rome with Professor Jodi Magness

In the first century B.C.E., Herod the Great, who ruled Judea as client king on behalf of Rome, built a fortified palace atop the mountain of Masada overlooking the Dead Sea.  Seventy years after Herod's death, the First Jewish Revolt against Rome broke out and Jewish rebels occupied Masada.  According to the ancient historian Flavius Josephus, at the end of the revolt the Romans besieged the mountain and the Jewish rebels committed mass suicide.  In this slide-illustrated lecture, we survey the history and archaeology of Masada, including the results of excavations in the Roman siege works which Professor Jodi Magness co-directed in 1995.

Jodi Magness is the Kenan Distinguished Professor for Teaching Excellence in Early Judaism at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She is a distinguished archaeologist, having participated in 20 different excavations in Israel and Greece. Her research interests include Jerusalem, Qumran and the Dead Sea Scrolls, ancient synagogues, Masada, the Roman army in the East, and ancient pottery. She has numerous publications, including award-winning books, articles, and lectures for The Great Courses company. Professor Magness received her B.A. in Archaeology and History from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and her Ph.D. in Classical Archaeology from the University of Pennsylvania.

The lecture will be preceded by Minhah at 5:30pm and followed by Kabbalat Shabbat services at 6:45pm and Shabbat dinner and a Q&A with Prof. Magness from 7:45-9pm. The lecture and service are free. Dinner costs $18 per adult before March 15; $22 per adult after March 15; $10 per child.
