2018 Interfaith Poverty Conference

Posted

Join faith leaders, congregation members, advocacy and service organizations to learn more about poverty issues in Rhode Island and how you can make a difference!

This year we are delighted to welcome Rev. Traci Blackmon, Executive Minister of Justice & Local Church Ministries for The United Church of Christ and Senior Pastor of Christ The King United Church of Christ in Florissant, MO.

In addition to our keynote, we will have four workshop choices available:

Housing is a Human Right: Ensuring access to affordable housing is one of the most effective ways to alleviate poverty. This panel of housing experts will talk about the barriers to housing, legislative initiatives to assure equal access to housing and programs that are working to create housing and safe neighborhoods.

Caring for our Children: Growing up in poverty has lifelong consequences on our children. It prevents them from having equal opportunities to succeed in life and robs the state and the nation of their future contributions. This workshop will focus on childhood poverty programs and policy initiatives around quality childhood education, school infrastructure and access to affordable and nutritious food in Rhode Island.

Race and Poverty: Systemic racism is deeply entwined to issues of poverty in our state and in the nation. Join this panel of faith leaders, immigrant rights activists, and Rhode Island advocates as they discuss the structural dimensions of poverty related to race and efforts to ameliorate this inequity.

Fair Pay / Equal Pay: Rhode Island’s economic recovery depends on the creation of good jobs that pay fair wages. This workshop will look at issues related to employment including the Living Wage Campaign, justice for immigrant workers and preventing wage discrimination.

A full breakfast will be served, from 8AM-8:30AM.

We encourage you to bring a team from your congregation/organization -- with a reduced rate for registration if you come as a group of 3+.

Tiered ticket pricing is available based on economic need.

Many thanks to our platinum-level event sponsor, Helen Hudson Foundation, our premier-level sponsor, Neighborhood Health Plan of RI, and our ongoing sustaining funder, the RI Foundation.
